Goals For Our Forest Land

Goals for our Forest Land

Protecting the Land, Water, and Wildlife

Woodland Community Land Trust tries to protect the forest and ecosystems which it holds for the community. This includes:

  • Managing and protecting a healthy forest with a diversity of native wildlife.Preventing erosion. Protecting and when appropriate restoring the soil.
  • Repairing land that has been strip or deep mined, and the water bodies that the mining has effected.
  • Protecting threatened and endangered wildlife, and increasing wildlife populations.
  • Planting and protecting native plants.
  • Protecting, monitoring, and repairing creeks and springs to ensure that they support life, are healthy and unpolluted, and sustain the potential to provide a water supply for future generations.
  • Exploring ways to conserve water, protect the water supply, and preserve a clean water supply for now and the future.

Managing a forest that people can enjoy

Land should be available for residents and community members to enjoy alongside the wildlife and natural ecosystems. This includes

  • Creating a system of trails and resting areas to facilitate hiking, walking, reflection, study of wildlife, bird watching, and similar activities.
  • Managing a visually attractive forest.
  • Creating camping facilities as appropriate

Allowing for the gathering and growing of useful products including:

  • Harvesting of small amounts of firewood, fence post material, and lumber in a sustainable manner which does not interfere with the other objectives.
  • Gathering non-timber forest products including mushrooms, ginseng, nuts, honey, items for crafts etc. in a sustainable manner which would not interfere with the other goals.
  • Reserving land that would be appropriate for gardening. Promoting practices such as composting, crop rotation, and cover crops to rebuild the soil.
